Energy Saving Tips – How to Lower Electricity Bill

Energy Saving Tips

Energy saving tips designed to help you cut electricity costs and lower your electric bill.

With summer in full swing, electric bills tend to skyrocket, as everyone tries to escape the heat. Living in the age of technology, we often struggle to understand how so much power is used each month, leaving our wallets suffering. Thankfully, there are a number of great ways to cut energy costs, ranging from the ‘no cost option’, up to ‘investing to save’.

In an attempt to help you cut your energy costs and promote affordable living, we have put together a comprehensive list of easy and effective ways that you can save electricity at home.

The best part about no cost energy saving options is that each and every person can implement them. All it takes is some dedication and slight changes to your living behaviour.

Use less hot water

Many people don’t even realise that they are wasting water. While Bardale Village makes use of eco-friendly solar water cylinders, here are some great ways that you can lower the amount of hot water used:

  • Shower instead of bathing
  • Wash a full load of dishes, rather than one dish at a time
  • Fix any leaking taps or pipes
  • Use cold water for most laundry loads

Switch off equipment when not in use

Many appliances can still draw 20% or more of normal electricity use even when on standby. Because of this, we recommend switching appliances off at the wall plug when they are not in use.

Investing in affordable energy saving methods can lead to some fantastic energy savings.

Install efficient lighting

Besides lasting much longer, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use 75% less power than traditional incandescent light bulbs. While a bit more expensive upfront, LED bulbs are even more efficient than CFLs. They also last 130 times longer than CFLs, making them well worth the price tag.

Install efficient ‘low-flow’ showerheads

Low-flow showerheads are affordable and can cut your hot water consumption by 25-60%. Besides cutting energy costs, this option is also a great way to lower your water bill.

Install ceiling fans rather than air conditioners

Ceiling fans are great thanks to their cost-effective and energy saving nature. During summer they can fill a room with a refreshing breeze, while in winter they can be used to circulate heated air around.

While these options have a higher cost upfront, their energy saving rewards pay off greatly in the long run.

Insulate the ceiling

Good ceiling insulation can keep your home up to 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 5 degrees warmer in the winter. More comfortable indoor temperatures result in less spending needed on electrical cooling and heating.

Install solar panels

While Bardale Village already makes use of eco-friendly solar water heating, using renewable energy by adding additional solar panels to your home can play a huge role in lowering energy costs. Besides cutting electricity costs, investing in solar storage batteries will allow you to beat load shedding, making you the envy of the neighbourhood.
